About Nathan

What are your roles at Five Q?

I am the primary point person for support at Five Q. My other tasks include training, systems administration, and programming.

Where do you live?

Lancaster, PA

What did you do before coming to Five Q?

I worked at Gospel Communications International, providing technical support for the online outreaches of several hundred Christian ministries. Prior to that, I was a network administrator, PC technician / support, and technology trainer at the international headquarters of Child Evangelism Fellowship. I was also part of the CEF Praise and Worship band!

What do you like to do outside of work?

I am an avid reader and love music. I help teach a 2nd and 3rd grade Sunday School class at my church, and also love spending time with my parents and sisters who live not too far away. Some side pursuits I have are that I'm writing a speculative Christian fiction series with a best friend, and have been toying with Android development for smart phones and tablets.

Advice From Nathan

Nathan's advice on email marketing:

Reaching your constituents via email can be tricky these days, due to the sheer amount of spam going around. You want to get information you consider important out to your users - but do they want to see it? The average open and read rate for mass emails these days is only 10-20 percent - which sounds depressingly low. What is the answer?

(1) Do not be depressed by small open/read figures - use them (and email tracking reports) to figure out how to make your emails more interesting to the readers.

(2) Less is more - you should not necessarily send an email to every single person for which you have an email address. Only send email to subscribers that you really believe want to receive your emails.

(3) Remove spam characteristics - make sure that the contents of your email are appropriate. It is also important that there be more text copy in the email than images.

(4) Frequency matters - sending emails too often will callous your users towards your emails, and they may make a habit of just deleting them or marking them as spam.

Nathan's advice about passwords:

ALWAYS remember that a password may be all that stands between you and complete identity theft and abuse. Treat every password you setup as important. Give as much care as you would with your credit card information to your passwords. Do you have a hard time remembering your passwords or need password assistance? Try using a tool like 1Password - http://agilewebsolutions.com/onepassword - or PassPack - http://www.passpack.com/ - to remember your passwords and keep them all safe. These tools will also help you pick good password values.
