Advice From Seth
Seth’s advice about what makes design effective
AIGA, the professional association for design, defines graphic design as a creative process that combines art and technology to communicate ideas. Designers generally work with a variety of communication tools, using imagery and typography, in order to convey a message from a client to a particular audience. It is visual communication manifested in countless forms, expressions, emotions and media.
A number of factors all work together to make up effective design. At a basic level, quality graphic design will consist of the following:
* Contrast: Is the text legible? Is there separation from the background? This can also refer to contrast in the size and style of elements.
* Repetition: Consistent application of elements throughout a piece or site brings cohesiveness.
* Dominant Focal Point: Something to draw the visitor in and make them want to look around.
* Easy Eye Flow: Give the visitor clues about the order of importance on a page so they can effortlessly flow from segment to segment.
* Alignment: Floating in random space may sound fun, but it is the first tipoff to poor design.
* Proximity: Elements that belong together should be grouped close enough together to let the reader know they are related.
* Typography: Smart, professional use of type is a craft in-and-of itself and plays a huge role in communicating ideas and emotions.
Starting with these fundamental pillars of design will ensure you're properly maximizing it's influence within your marketing campaigns. Every company will inevitably be judged by first impressions and appearances — are you making the most of those opportunities with effective design?
