Accessibility

What is accessibility?

"Accessibility" is the art of making a website accessible to disabled users. It is not a single technology or a single practice. Instead, it is a suite of standards and best practices.

Is accessibility expensive?

Some elements of accessibility can be expensive. For example, adding closed captioning to videos is not always cheap. However, there are simple things you can do to make a website more accessible such as adding a "jump to contact" link in the top of your HTML. This enables blind users with screen readers to skip over navigation to easily access the page content.

How does accessibility drive results?

The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research estimates roughly 10% of users have one or more disabilities that affect their Internet usage. Beyond reaching more people, implementing accessibility best practices coupled with search engine optimization (SEO) recommendations can improve the overall performance of your website.

Keys to Collaboration

  • Find people to help you test.

Recruit a few disabled users to help you test the website. Their feedback is invaluable. You may just be surprised at the features on your website that make the greatest impact on them.

Upfront planning keeps it cost effective.

Many people ignore accessibility because they think it is expensive. If you plan upfront, you can add many accessibility features without adding cost.
