Flexible Content Management System (CMS)

What is content management?

Content management is the process and tools used to manage a website. Five Q focuses on a "bottom up" approach to content management. Starting with the excellent Django framework, Five Q has developed a tool we call "Springboard". Springboard helps us rapidly craft content management tools around the needs of our clients. The end result is a system that costs the same as a one-size-fits-all tool, but works remarkably better.

Is a specialized content management solution expensive?

It all depends on what you need. If all you want to do is blog, then a off-the-shelf system like WordPress is great. However, many organizations need to manage content that does not fit into a pre-canned system. In those cases, it makes more sense to use a framework to build a specialized solution, and is often cheaper than you would expect.

Are specialized content management solutions hard to maintain?

Not really. In fact, tools like Django and Springboard makes things easier and cheaper. How? Whenever you need to customize an off-the-shelf CMS, you need to maintain those customizations. If the CMS software changes, you need to update your code. Frameworks are designed to be maintainable... off-the-shelf solutions tend to be hit and miss.

How does a flexible content management drive results?

A easy-to-use content management system is a huge timesaver for staff, since these tools are designed with non-technical people in mind. This makes it much more likely that your website content will be kept up-to-date if the tools are easy to use.

Keys to Collaboration

  • Start simple and build in phases.

It is better to start with knowing what you need, and save some budget for enhancements down the road. Sure you can have all the features possible, but user feedback is invaluable to getting something right, so plan ahead.

It is a process, not just a tool.

Content management is labor intensive. Someone needs to write, edit, and proofread your copy. Someone needs to take pictures and prepare them for the website. Make sure you know who is doing what, and set aside time to actually do it on a weekly or monthly basis.

Know what you want to manage.

Content management systems often include features you will never use. Figure out what content you want to manage, and use that to drive your decision-making process.
