Web & Interactive Design

What is web & interactive design?

A website's design is the first thing visitors see when they come to a website page. It is both (a) what your website looks like and (b) how the user interface behaves for visitors. From a purely visual standpoint, web design will seek to balance iconography, photography, typography, and user interface design. Fundamentally we believe that a web design is a "user interface." It is not just a picture; it is a piece of software users interact with on the web.

How can I tell if my website has a good user interface?

It is important to make a distinction between a pretty and an effective user interface. A pretty user interface may not necessarily an effective one. There are many visually attractive websites that are not effective. We strive toward an effective user interface that enables visitors to quickly locate content relevant to them on a page.

How does web & interaction design drive results?

Regardless of demographic, website visitors are visual people. However, maximizing results means knowing the visual tastes of those you are trying to reach. Things like color choice, imagery, and the general look-and-feel are critical to align with your visitor’s tastes. Any web design that fails to connect with its visitors emotionally or quickly to relevant content is ineffective. An effectively designed website is critical for positive results.

Keys to Collaboration

  • Find inspiration.

Surf the web for a few hours, taking note of websites you like and do not like. Explain the specific things you love and hate about each example. Connect your preferences with adjectives such as clean, contemporary, professional, and minimalistic with website examples that embody them.

    Have your logo ready.

Most businesses and organizations have a logo. This is a foundational part of any web design. Have your official logo ready in AI (Adobe Illustrator) or EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) format to kick things off quickly!

    Make decisions.

Details are important but so is making progress. So make decisions. Remember you do not have to live with them forever. Once your new website is live, usability can be measured and better-informed decisions can be made to adjust things accordingly.

    Understand the medium.

If you have done print work in the past, remember the web is a different medium with its own rules. Text and color often look different from browser to browser and operating system to operating system. It is also best if layouts are somewhat fluid to account for changing user settings.
